The trail follows the Clutha Mata-au River through the Roxburgh Gorge to the Roxburgh Dam. We actually suggest starting in Clyde and riding the Anniversary trail to Alexandra adding an extra 12kms.
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is really three parts, first 10km is from Alexandra to Doctors Point. You then get on a boat and travel 12kms down the lake to Shingle Creek where you disembark. You will then ride 12 kms to the Roxburgh Dam, some very impressive switchbacks are there to be ridden. On crossing the Roxburgh Dam, you join the Clutha Gold Trail at Commissioners Flat. It is a short 9kms to Roxburgh Town – this is our pick-up location for our “One Day Wonder” trips at “103 The Store”.
The Roxburgh Gorge has bluffs rising almost 350 metres on both sides of the river and has been described as New Zealand’s ‘Grand Canyon’ and there are numerous relics of Chinese miner huts and two mining settlements. Your boat driver will fill you in on all of these wee gems.
You can ride this as a “One Day Wonder” to Roxburgh. On a short timeframe just ride into Doctors Point and back out.
