Otago Central Rail Trail “Family” One Day Wonder

This trip is perfect for the Family, whether it is part of  a 10 day stay in Central Otago or you have a spare day on on a road trip.

Your Day

The Poolburn Gorge Section will be one the highlights for your “Family One Day Wonder”. The Otago Central Rail Trail as it cuts through the Raggedy Range that separates the Manukerikia and Ida Valleys. Highlights of this section of the trail include the 37m high Poolburn Viaduct, two tunnels, the trails longest bridge (curved) and Central Otago stunning landscapes.

Optional ride is; to take a side trip to historic Ophir

Leaving the Poolburn Gorge you head through the little towns of Lauder and Omakau, great cafes at both locations. Continue on cycling down Tiger Hill to the Chatto Creek Tavern a great place to relax and refresh yourselves. Your “Family” One Day Wonder can finish here with us collecting you.  Choosing to ride all the way back to Clyde via the Otago Central rail Trail or the very scenic Alexandra to Clyde River Trail is a popular finishing option.

Cycling Distances:
Auripo to Chatto Creek: 29.5km, 34.5km if you do the side trip to Ophir
Auripo to Clyde: 48.5km, 63.5km if you do the side trip to Ophir and ride the River Trail

What you get:

• Hire of the latest bikes and attachments that will suit the requirements of your family. The adult bikes will be Trek Roscoe 7 with Hydraulic disc brakes and 27+ wheels and tyres , includes helmet, NZ Manufactured Water Bottle, dual density saddle cover and a top mounted pannier bag. • Transport to Auripo

• Pick up from Chatto Creek and return to Clyde

• Monday -Friday we can also offer complimentary transfers from Cromwell to Clyde with collection from your accommodation at around 8.45am and return to Cromwell at 4.30pm  (4 people min) .

E Bikes

Merida  Electric Bike for an extra $55 per person. We also have E Bikes for the shorter / younger members of your family – very safe and appropriate

Departure Times and Duration:

Trip departs on demand with a minimum of 2 people. We ask you are at our shop in Clyde at 9am.

Allow 5- 6 hours for the whole experience including some time to stop for a bite to eat and something to quench your thirst!
